Do native plants need watering?

Often during establishment. Later needs depend on species, soil, weather and site suitability; native does not mean drought-proof. Check young root balls rather than assuming rainfall has reached them. Read the irrigation note.

How do I know whether a plant is native here?

Check the scientific name against regional records and local habitat guidance. Statewide distribution alone does not prove local suitability. Ask about the source of nursery stock, and avoid collecting plants from the wild. Start with regional plant matching.

Should I replace all my lawn?

Not necessarily. Keep lawn that serves a real use and start with a manageable area that is difficult or unnecessary to maintain as turf. Consider play, pets, access, sightlines and neighborhood rules before changing the whole space.

Can every yard have a rain garden?

No. Soil infiltration, foundations, utilities, wells, septic systems, slopes and contamination can restrict or rule out a location. Seek local assessment. An ordinary damp patch is not automatically a safe place to concentrate more runoff. Explore rainwater constraints.

Is rain barrel water safe to drink?

No. Untreated roof runoff is not drinking water. Use appropriate landscape practices and seek public-health guidance for edible crops. Secure the container and lid, screen openings and provide a safe overflow route.

Will compost fix clay soil?

Compost may improve some soil properties but does not change the underlying texture or fix drainage and compaction by itself. Test and assess before adding it. Excess compost can also supply more nutrients or salts than a planting needs. Read about measured amendment use.

Why does my compost smell bad?

Excess moisture, compacted material or inappropriate ingredients may limit airflow or attract pests. Add suitable dry material, improve aeration and check the ingredient mix. Keep meat, greasy foods and pet waste out of a basic backyard system.

Are permeable paths maintenance-free?

No. Sediment can clog the surface or joints. Correct base design, suitable soil or drainage, cleaning and winter maintenance all matter. A permeable-looking surface over an unsuitable base may still produce runoff or standing water.

How many minutes should I run irrigation?

There is no universal run time. Delivery rate, soil, rooting depth, rainfall and plant age determine what is appropriate. Check moisture and observe infiltration. Fix leaks and overspray before increasing a schedule.
