About these notes

Our Landscape Principles

A useful yard is a relationship between people, ground, climate and the life already there.

Independent guidance, grounded in place

Quivaroyardmn.com is an independent informational website for householders considering lower-impact landscape changes. We connect planting, rainfall, soil and maintenance rather than treating them as separate purchases.

Minnesota provides a useful regional reference throughout these notes. It does not define the conditions of every reader's property. Advice should be adapted to your locality, climate, soil, regulations and the needs of the people using the space.

We are not a landscape contractor, engineering service, government program or substitute for an on-site assessment. We do not claim certification or affiliation with the organizations cited.

Observe before intervening

Learn what the existing yard does during rain, heat, shade and winter. Preserve healthy features that already work. A small, well-understood change can be more effective than a large redesign based on assumptions.

Use local ecological context

Native status, provenance and habitat matter. We distinguish drought tolerance from native status and make moisture and light requirements explicit rather than presenting a universal plant list.

Follow the whole water route

Collection is only useful when overflow is safe. Infiltration is only appropriate when site conditions allow it. Water-saving equipment is only effective when it is correctly selected, installed and maintained.

Include the work afterward

Weeding, access, winter care and equipment checks belong in the initial plan. A design that exceeds your available time is unlikely to deliver its intended environmental benefits.

How to use our sources

We point to public agencies, university extension resources and established conservation organizations for further investigation. Their information may change. Check current primary guidance, local rules and product instructions before acting.

Plant tables and diagrams are educational summaries. They do not specify construction dimensions, certify a site's suitability or guarantee performance.
